Sony Account FAQs

In addition to these two great articles about What is Sony Account and How to Authenticate with Sony Account, the Ci Team thought it might be helpful to provide some FAQs for our new Sony Account support:


How can I sign in with my Sony authentication?

On the Ci login page or registration page a user will see a black button below the email entry that labeled, “Sign in with Sony Account”.  Once that button is clicked, the user will be taken to the Sony authentication system (a separate application from Ci) where the user can sign in or create their Sony Account.  Once the user signs in, it will return the user back to Ci.


How can I register for a Sony Account?

On the Ci login page or registration page, the user will see a black button below the email entry that labeled, “Sign in with Sony Account”.  Once that button is clicked, the user will be taken to the Sony authentication system (a separate application from Ci).  Within that page, the user can click the button create an account.  Once the user is done creating the account and verifying the user's email,  the user will be directly taken back to Ci and the account should then be linked.


What information does Sony Account collect?

  • First Name (Required by Ci)
  • Last Name (Required by Ci)
  • Language preference (Required by Ci)
  • Date of Birth (Required by Sony Account password recovery system)


Can I use the same credentials I use for Sony authentication linked to another Sony product? (e.g. PlayStation)

Yes.  Users can and are encouraged to use the same credentials across Sony products.


Will Enterprise SSO authentication be affected?

No.  Enterprise SSO will work as is.  The “Sign in with Sony Account” button will not appear on any custom domains.  If the user tries to sign into Ci via Sony authentication using an Enterprise SSO registered domain the user will be redirected to the appropriate Enterprise SSO page.


What happens if a user signs in with Sony authentication, but a Ci account already exists with the same email ID?

The user will be asked if they want to link this Sony authentication to the existing Ci account or go back to the sign-in page.  The system will not allow two different accounts with the same email ID to exist.  If the user chooses to link the account, the user will be taken to the existing Ci account with their Sony authentication linked.  After link has been completed, the user will be able to use any one of Ci authentication or Sony authentication to access their Ci account.


Once I link my Ci account to Sony authentication can I still use Ci authentication?

Yes. Users can choose any authentication method to sign in once their account is linked.  Users who created their Ci account using Sony authentication might have to set a Ci authentication password within their account settings or go through the forgot password flow to use Ci authentication.


Can I connect my Sony authentication to an existing Ci account?

Yes.  Users can connect their Sony authentication to their Ci account in two ways:

  1. A user can click on their avatar in the lower left hand navigation, and select,  "Account Settings", then on the resulting page, select "Sign in & Security" to connect their Sony account.
  2. If the user's Sony account shares the same email as their Ci account, the user can use the authentication with Sony and accept the prompt to connect Sony authentication to the Ci account.


Can I disconnect Sony authentication from my Ci account?

Yes.  Users can disconnect their Sony authentication from their Ci account by clicking on their avatar in the lower left hand navigation, and select,  "Account Settings", then on the resulting page, select "Sign in & Security" and hitting Disconnect within the Sony Account section.


Will my Ci account email be updated if I change the email on my Sony account?

No.  A user’s Ci account email will not be updated if they change their Sony Account email.  There is currently no way for the user to update their Ci account email within the user interface.  If the user wishes to update their Ci account email they should reach out to Ci support who will then work with the engineering team to change the user’s email.


Will my Ci account password be updated if I change the password on my Sony account?

No.  A user’s Ci account password will not be updated if they change their Sony Account password. To update their Ci account password the user can click on their avatar in the lower left hand navigation, and select,  "Account Settings", then on the resulting page, select "Sign in & Security".  The user can click the pen icon next to the password field.  Alternatively, users can also go through the forgot password flow to set a new Ci account password.


Will my Ci account email be marked as verified if I log in with Sony authentication?

Yes.  Since the Sony Account creation process involves the user verifying their email.  Ci will also mark the user's account as email verified.


How can I manage my Sony Account?

Users can find the link to manage their Sony Account by clicking on their avatar in the lower left hand navigation, and select,  "Account Settings", then on the resulting page, select "Sign in & Security".


What happens if the Sony Authentication system is down or I am not able to log-in via Sony authentication?

Since Ci authentication is still available, users can always use that to get access to their account.  If the user never set up a Ci authentication password, they can go through the forgot password flow to set a new password up.

Can I log into the mobile app using Sony authentication?

Yes.  Since Ci mobile leverages the browser to allow users to log in, users will be able to use any method of authentication available on the browser.


Can 3rd party API clients authenticate with Sony ID?

Yes.  They would use the standard OAuth authentication that is used with access to the Ci REST APIs and the necessary credentials.
